Our Experience at SLT Academy with the FOMO app:
Firstly I just need to start with the following, this is the only shooting range package in Cape Town that I have ever seen give UNLIMITED ammunition for any shooting package, the instructor believes in not counting ammunition but getting you used to shooting in a safe space without the pressure of thinking: “I only have 6 bullets left”.
We got to the shooting range at about 8am not knowing what to expect, new things like this are always a little nerve wrecking but we were quickly made to feel extremely comfortable. I had shot guns before, it was a long time ago and my memory on everything escaped me, clearly the last experience was a lot more amateur as it felt nothing like this one .
Pro tip: take a lot of water and snacks, you will need it!!! I was snacking all day, call it stress eating, just kidding. I was immediately put at ease by the instructor, his passion and knowledge was apparent right off the bat!
The shooting range that SLT Training Academy uses is outdoors and is about 10km from Cape Town City centre. The owner of SLT Shooting believes that we should be fully educated about guns and gun safety especially. He believes you shouldn’t be allowed to go to a shooting range package and just be able to fire off a couple of rounds and walk away. We should be educated on the risks of guns, when guns become unsafe, how to properly handle guns and others when you are around live ammunition.
During the half day experience that we spent there we learnt everything from how to stand while holding a gun, how to properly draw your weapon, how weapons are only dangerous when they are being handled by someone to how to shoot a sniper!!! And do it well might I add.
Safety first
First up was a mandatory safety briefing, our instructor, has 35 years of experience and. His manner was friendly & funny but always firm and focused around being safe – and I felt absolutely safe and secure under his watchful eye.
The briefing was 100% interactive, and I appreciated the opportunity to practice handling unloaded guns in an unintimidating space before the real shooting began. Throughout the safety briefing Swade displayed a comic touch, but his parting words were deadly serious: “Guns are only dangerous in someones hands without the proper training.”
The main attraction: The Actual shooting and the SNIPER!
We all collected our earmuffs and safety glasses and headed to the front line . Our instructor has already fitted us with holsters where we are to keep our guys at all times with the safety on unless instructed by him to do otherwise.
We took turns shooting the hand guns towards the target and as everyone started feeling more comfortable the instructor moved us further away from the targets, some of us more nervous with the guns being fired than others he spent more time with those who he could see were struggling but as soon as we were all relaxed he knew we were ready for the next event… the SNIPER shooting.
We blew up some balloons and attached them to to the targets and we were ready to sniper. We started by standing against a poll for balance and the sniper on our shoulders. You call the colour of the balloon you want to hit and bang just like that with natures elements against you like the damn wind, you get that balloon and you called dead in the middle and you feel like the real Chuck Norris. Well that’s how it was for me at least! We went onto sitting with the rifles and then the instructor brought out a table for us to lay on and shoot! Now if badass was a person that would be me in that moment, laying on the table like I had been staking out the place for days, calling out my colour and boom! BADASS!
This was how the day went:
- Safety briefing and gun discussion
- Getting holstered with unloaded guns
- Stance practice, how to draw your weapon etc.
- Learn to load your own gun
- Short safety recap with loaded gun in your holster
- Shoot your hand gun from 10 meters (unlimited tries)
- Shoot your hand gun from 20 meters (unlimited tries)
- Blow up as many balloons as possible for sniper shooting
- Sniper lesson (shoot at balloons from 50 meters away)
- Standing sniper shooting
- Sitting sniper shooting
- Rooftop sniper lay-down shooting
Shooting the rifles was a lot easier than I had expected, and SLT Training is one of the only places in the world where you can get to experience this adrenalin rush first-hand.

Shooting as a sport:
Shooting as a sport demonstrates the pure control, accuracy as well as speed of the shooter in aiming at targets using guns like pistols and rifles. Shooting sports began more than 500 years ago in European countries. It became super popular in the US during the 1950’s when there was a national association for this sport that was created. Now, shooting as a sport is well-known and enjoyed worldwide.
There are different categories of this sport depending on the guns used and the format of the competitions. There are three main guns that are widely used in competitions and those are: rifles, pistols, and shotguns.
Rifle is a shoulder firearm with a long barrel and rifled bore. They are commonly long and require two hand to hold. Popular shooting games using this type of gun are four position small bore, gallery riffle shooting, benchrest shooting, high power rifle, biathlon (combination of shooting and cross-country skiing), fullbore target shooting (shooting ranges are at 300- 1200 meters), field target (more popular in UK) and so many more.
Pistols (or handguns) are the smaller guns, used in shorter ranges and have less accuracy if you compare them to rifles. These guns are intended for one hand use only. Popular shooting games include modern pentathlon where it involves timed shooting with an air pistol. Then the silhouette shooting. The goal is to hit all metallic targets that are placed at different distances. It is scored on how many targets you hit.
Shotguns are firearms that are doubled barreled smoothbore shoulder weapons. They are extremely similar to rifles. More often, they are for pump-action or single-shot-and-reload actions. Cowboy shooting and practical shooting generally uses shotgun. They are very popular in countries where handguns are banned.
Action shooting will involve the measuring of the speed of how long a shooter can take to hit one or more targets. Targets can either be moving or static. Scoring will be based on accuracy of the hit or falling targets.

Shotgun Shooting Sports
- Clay pigeon shooting — the shooters try to shoot flying targets like clay pigeons with a shotgun.
- Skeet Shooting — targets are thrown in singles and doubles from two traps situated 40m apart.
- Trap Shooting — 1 or 2 targets are thrown away from traps situated 15m in front of the shooter.
- Sporting Clays — shooters move about a course, attempting to hit varying targets projected at different angles, speed, elevation, and distances.
