South African Women’s Day 9 August, how do we celebrate our Women? This is a day that should 100% be recognized and celebrated. Women you should be celebrating yourself on this day, you should be celebrating and uplifting your fellow Women and men you should be finding out how you can make the Women in your life feel special and appreciated.
Quick History: What is Women’s Day about?
Every year in South Africa National Women’s Day is celebrated on the 9th of August. Women’s Day is a public holiday that is a reminder of the crucial role that women play in our country but also in our society.
National Women’s Day is not to be confused with International Women’s day which is celebrated globally on the 8th of March. The 9th of August is not just another public holiday; it’s an opportunity to pay respect to the South African women who stood together to fight against laws that not only affected women in South Africa, but all people of colour.
What Happened on the 9th of August 1956?
4 incredibly brave women, with 20 000 followers, marched to the Parliament building in Pretoria to hand over a pile of petitions collectively containing +- 100 000 signatures against the pass law. These women refused to be silenced.
A Pass was a “permission slip” which allowed people of colour to enter “restricted” areas during apartheid. Hundreds of women were prisoned but eventually the Pass laws were withdrawn for African Women until the were reintroduced in the early 1950’s.
The women sang: “Wathint` abafazi, Strijdom!” : you strike a woman, you strike a rock!
The women also sang Nkosi Sikeleli Afrika at the end of their brave, soulful protest before walking away peacefully, they knew they had just made history.
